This volume is published in conjunction with an exhibition surveying Japanese art from the perspective of design at the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design.

Although it absorbed many influences from China, Japanese art developed along a unique path, which led to the emergence of a “Japanese style” characterised by simplified expression, clarity, and a decorative quality accentuated through the use of colour, as well as gold and silver. This was applied not only to painting but also to crafts associated with everyday life. In particular the Rimpa school is recognised for innovative approaches and bold compositions marked by a strong emphasis on ornamentation.
